Why Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine Can Work So Well Together

This reflection is based on Dr Tahya’s experience during her internship in China in 2025.

I was recently talking to someone about something I really appreciated during my internship in China, which was seeing how closely Chinese medicine and Western medicine worked together in hospital settings.

Over there, patients might see a doctor, have scans or tests through Western medicine, and also receive acupuncture or herbal medicine as part of their care. It was not framed as choosing one system over the other. It was about using the strengths of both.

That experience stayed with me, and it is very much how we practise at our clinic as well.

My degree took five years and included a strong foundation in Western medical training, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, diagnosis, and investigations. That matters, because it means we can understand what is happening from multiple angles and support patients safely and appropriately.

Sometimes people assume that if they are already receiving Western medical treatment, they cannot also have acupuncture or herbal medicine. But it does not have to work that way.

These approaches can be complementary. Rather than replacing the care already in place, Chinese medicine can be used to support the body alongside it.

At Zhong Centre, that is how we see it. It is not about one system competing with another. It is about thoughtful, integrated care that supports the person as a whole.
