Why Acupuncturists Look at Your Tongue

One of the things that often surprises people in clinic is how much attention we give to the tongue.
In Chinese medicine, the tongue is seen as a small but very useful window into what is happening inside the body. Because it is closely connected to the organ systems through the channels, changes in the tongue can give us clues about how the body is functioning.
When we look at the colour of the tongue, we are looking for signs that may reflect heat, cold, or the state of Blood in the body.
The shape of the tongue can also tell us something. It may suggest whether the body is more deficient, or whether it is holding Dampness.
Then there is the coating. This often gives us information about how the Spleen and Stomach are managing digestion and fluids.
Different parts of the tongue are also associated with different organ systems. The tip is linked to the Heart and the mind. The centre reflects digestion. The two sides are often related to the Liver.
It is only one part of the overall picture, but it can offer a surprising amount of information. When combined with the pulse, your symptoms, and the wider pattern, tongue observation helps us understand what may be happening internally and how best to support the body.
At Zhong Centre, it is one of the simple but important ways we build a treatment picture that is tailored to you.
