When Your Nervous System Feels Stuck on High Alert

Sometimes people do not just feel tired. They feel unsettled.

It can show up as poor sleep, vivid dreaming, palpitations, forgetfulness, feeling easily startled, or a general sense of unease. For some people, it is that feeling of being exhausted but still unable to properly switch off.

In Chinese medicine, this pattern is often understood through the relationship between Yin, Yang, Liver Qi, and the Shen.

When Kidney Yin is depleted, the body lacks some of the deeper cooling and nourishing support that helps keep Yang balanced. Without that anchor, heat can rise upward. This may show up as restlessness at night, feeling wired late in the evening, heat in the chest or palms, dry mouth, or difficulty settling the mind.

At the same time, when Liver Qi becomes constrained, often through prolonged stress or emotional suppression, tension begins to build. This can present as irritability, mood swings, frequent sighing, headaches, or feeling emotionally on edge.

From this perspective, the body is not simply “bad at sleeping.” It is trying to function while carrying stress, depletion, and internal imbalance all at once.

Acupuncture helps by regulating the nervous system and reducing cortisol levels, allowing the body to move out of a constant stress response. In Chinese medicine terms, treatment works to nourish the Blood and Yin, regulate Liver Qi, and anchor the Shen.

Over time, this can help the body return to a more settled and steady internal state, supporting calmer sleep, clearer thinking, and a nervous system that no longer feels like it is always on high alert.

At Zhong Centre, this kind of treatment is never just about getting more hours of sleep. It is about helping the whole system feel safer, steadier, and more supported.
