Why Breast Tenderness Before Your Period Happens in Chinese Medicine
Share
Breast tenderness before a period is something many people experience, but in Chinese medicine, it is not seen as random.
When Qi and Blood are flowing smoothly, the tissues are better nourished and the body moves through the cycle with more ease. But when that smooth flow is disrupted, whether through stress or internal imbalance, the result can be swelling, distension, or tenderness in the breasts before menstruation.
The quality of the tenderness can also tell us more. If it feels more dull and lingering, or comes with fatigue or lighter periods, it may point to Blood deficiency not properly nourishing the tissues.
Sometimes small nodules or more pronounced swelling can suggest Phlegm or Damp accumulation within the channels.
In clinic, we do not look at breast tenderness on its own. We look at the broader pattern, including the menstrual cycle itself, digestion, stress, sleep, and emotional state, because all of these influence how Qi and Blood move through the body.
From this perspective, breast tenderness is not just something to push through each month. It is feedback from the body.
When the underlying imbalance is addressed and Qi and Blood are moving more freely, the swelling and sensitivity often soften naturally, rather than becoming something you have to brace for every cycle.
At Zhong Centre, this is why treatment is always about the bigger picture, not just the symptom on its own.
